Oct. 20, 2024: Remembering Tom Coffey (1930 - 2024)

Fourth President (1974 - 1984) of Pearl River Little League passed away on October 19 at the age of 94.

Thomas George Coffey, Korean war veteran, retired Nyack Police Chief, and the fourth president (1974 - 1984) of Pearl River Little League, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2024, at the age of 94.

A career law enforcement official, Thomas Coffey moved to Pearl River in 1968, and became involved in PRLL around 1972, as his daughter was playing softball in the program run by Chuck Isberg.  Tom became vice-president only a few months before president Art Hopper died in March, 1973. Upon becoming the League’s fourth President, he became familiar with every function in the League, and served PRLL as President for 11 years (the second longest tenure of any PRLL president).  He ran the concession stand, often single-handedly, for many of those years.  He was involved in the expansion of the softball program and the planning for the new Senior Girls Field (now called McCarthy Field), which opened in 1983.  The softball announcing booth (The Coffey House) is named in his honor.

The official obituary can be seen on the Hannemann Funeral Home website (Link)

Obituary for Thomas George Coffey

Thomas George Coffey

Retired Nyack Chief of Police
March 17, 1930 – October 19,2024

Thomas George Coffey, of Pearl River NY passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the age of 94. Born on St. Patrick’s Day, 1930 in Nyack, NY. Tom lived a life marked by service, leadership, and a deep love for his family and community.

Tom was a graduate of Haverstraw High School and went on to get a degree in Animal Husbandry from the NYS Institute of Agriculture at Cobleskill. After graduation he was drafted into the army during the Korean War.

In 1955 he met the love of his life Ruth A. O’Hara and married her later that year.

Tom was a proud member of various law enforcement and veterans’ organizations. He was a long-standing member of the New York State and Rockland County Retired Chiefs of Police Associations, the Retired Police Association of the State of NY, and the American Legion, where he served as an Officer and Commander of the John Secor Post 329 in Pearl River. In addition to various positions at the state and county level. Tom was passionate about supporting Blue Star families and The Boys Club. He also ran and supported the Camp Shanks Museum for many years preserving the history of those who served. Tom remained an active member of the Korean War Veterans’ organization and American Legion; his service to his country was a point of immense pride.

Tom also served as President of the Pearl River Little League (1974-1984) after spending many years as a coach and running the Snack Stand. His commitment to the community’s youth was well known.

Tom’s dedication to law enforcement was unmatched. He began his career as a Patrolman in Piermont eventually transferring to the Village of Nyack in 1956, rising through the ranks to become the Chief of Police. He served with distinction for 32 years, retiring as Chief of the Nyack Police Department.

A true pillar of the community, Tom Coffey will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His kindness, integrity, and unwavering commitment to his family and the people he served will never be forgotten.

A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Tom is survived by his children: Clare Mulqueen (Michael), Thomas G. Coffey Jr. (Catherine), Michael J. Coffey (Jeanne), and James P. Coffey. He also leaves behind numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as his sisters Lorraine Holmes and Genevieve Coffey and brother-in-law George O’Hara (Betty).
Tom was predeceased by his cherished wife of 69 years, Ruth A. Coffey, and his grandson, Michael J. Coffey Jr.

Services will be held at Hannemann Funeral Home where family and friends are invited to celebrate the life of this remarkable man. May he rest in peace, reunited with his beloved Ruth.

July 18, 2024: PRLL BASEBALL 11's WIN WEST NYACK 11 TOURNAMENT

Team comes from behind after a 22 hour rain delay to down Suffern, 14-13.

The PRLL 11 year-old Baseball all-star team won the West Nyack 11 year-old Tournament, defeating Suffern in the title game, 14-13 on Thursday night (7/18).  -- LINK TO GAME AND TEAM PHOTOS --

On Wednesday night, when the game began, Pearl River trailed, 8-4, in the bottom of the fourth inning, and had two men on base with one out, when the skies opened, and thunderstorms rolled into the area. The game was suspended in place, and resumed on Thursday evening, and when the fourth inning ended, PRLL had pushed five runs across the plate to take the lead. Suffern re-took the lead in the top of the fifth inning, but the Pearl River boys again mashed the ball and took a 14-10 lead, then survived a Suffern scare to hang on, 14-13, for the tournament championship.

Together with the 9 year-olds' victory in West Nyack's earlier tournament, PRLL completed a rare sweep of the West Nyack summer tournaments.

The PRLL Softball 12's won both ends of a final round doubleheader, 3-0 and 12-1, over New City to take the District 18 championship on Wednesday night on Valentine Field at the South Orangetown LL complex.  PRLL's pitching was terrific, and several excellent fielding plays were made. Their bats exploded in the second game, which was ended by the mercy rule.  At the end of the second inning, with PRLL leading, 6-0, there was a long lightning/rain delay, and the skies opened again during the final inning, but the rain did not dampen PR's post-game celebration, which included receiving the District 18 championship banner.  SEE PHOTOS.

6/18/24: Astros Win AA Title. (See Photos)

The Astros rode a hot offense to victory in the AA Championship Game Tuesday night.  Photos have been uploaded (see link below).

The Astros are AA Champions.  The Astro bats buried the Pirates in a barrage of hits, winning both games of the Championship round of the AA Playoffs.  After losing their first playoff game to the Pirates, the team fought back with wins over the Nationals, Cardinals and Rangers to reach the finals of the double-elimination tournament, where the top-seeded Pirates were waiting.  But the Astros flipped the switch and out-hit the Pirates in Game 1 last Wednesday, and again this Tuesday, to capture the crown.  The Astros join the other division winners, the Yankees* (Major Boys),  Rockies (AAA), Fighting Irish (Major Girls) and Starlings (Minor Girls), as the 2024 PRLL Division Champions.  See the Photos tab (top menu) for photos.

*Note: The Yankees won their fourth consecutive title, a feat unmatched in this century, and at least since the 1970's, before which the records are unclear.

4/21/24: A Successful Opening Day

PRLL's Opening Day at Central Field enjoyed good weather and a substantial crowd.

A quick look at the playing field on PRLL's 2024 Opening Day contained many elements of past Opening Days on Anderson Field - clear, brisk weather; a good-sized gathering of PRLL players and parents; some local dignitaries; banners signifying past PRLL championships; awards for 2023 title-winning teams; and the American Legion Honor Guard. There was, however, one notable difference -- the ceremonies took place not on Anderson Field, as they have since 1965, but on Pearl River's Central Avenue Field.  The event was moved there this year out of concerns that the limited parking situation this year at Anderson would not accommodate the number of guests for the event.  PRLL's staff, including a hard-working grounds crew, pulled out all the stops.  They carted the banners and signs - even a couple of field signs (Bocket, McKiernan, etc.) from Anderson and hung them along the fences of Central Field, giving the event a familiar feel.   Kudos to the grounds crew, and to the young lady who sang the National Anthem, and thanks to the American Legion regulars who serve as Honor Guard each year. The Joan Bourke Award, honoring a long-serving PRLL volunteer, was presented to Mike Strehle, whose coaching and leadership has benefited hundreds of PRLL youth since the early 1980's.

4/10/24: Opening Day Ceremonies - Sunday, April 21 at 10:00 a.m.

This year's Opening Day Ceremonies will be held at the Central Avenue Field on Sunday, April 21 at 10 o'clock a.m.

Although the games of PRLL's Spring season have begun, we will still have "Opening Day" ceremonies, and these will take place on Sunday, April 21 at 10:00 a.m. at the Central Avenue Field in Pearl River.  We have chosen this venue due to the restricted parking situation at Anderson Field, and because the Central Avenue field is a convenient location for most of the families of Pearl River.  We urge all of our players and families to join us to celebrate the 2024 Season, which will be the 70th Season of the Pearl River Little League.  We look forward to seeing you there.

March 14, 2024: OUT OF ROOM -- PARKING CRUNCH AT ANDERSON

DataBank (prev. Verizon) parking lost to PRLL.  Schedules will limit games at Anderson and utilize outside fields.  No more than three games at a time will be played at Anderson.  See the "Fields" section on the "About" tab above, for a listing of the external fields that will be used, and links to directions.

The Season Approaches. Be aware of limited parking.

PEARL RIVER LITTLE LEAGUE NO LONGER HAS PARKING PRIVILEGES AT THE DATABANK (FORMERLY VERIZON) PROPERTY.  FOR 2024, WE HAVE TO MAKE DO WITH THE LIMITED PARKING AT ANDERSON FIELD.  WE STILL CANNOT PARK IN THE LEGION LOT NOR IN THE SPACES RESERVED FOR THE SENIOR RESIDENCE COMPLEX (THESE ARE MARKED SPACES OWNED BY THE AMERICAN LEGION AND LEASED TO THE RESIDENTIAL COMPLEX).

PARKING WILL THEREFORE BE TIGHT. WE ENCOURAGE CAR POOLING WHENEVER POSSIBLE.  WE WILL BE SCHEDULING NO MORE THAN THREE GAMES IN ANY ONE TIME SLOT.  WITH THE COOPERATION OF THE TOWN AND NEIGHBORING LITTLE LEAGUES, WE WILL BE PLAYING A LARGE NUMBER OF GAMES OFF-SITE, PRIMARILY ON FIELDS IN VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK AND SOUTH ORANGETOWN LITTLE LEAGUE, NANUET LITTLE LEAGUE AND A FEW AT WEST NYACK LITTLE LEAGUE AND HEMLOCK PARK IN CONGERS.

WE ASK FOR YOUR COOPERATION AND PATIENCE AS WE COPE WITH THE NEW SITUATION AND EXPLORE POTENTIAL LONG-TERM SOLUTIONS.

See the "Fields" section on the "About" tab above, for a listing of the external fields that will be used, and links to directions.
